Keyla Correia
Keyla joined the laboratory as a biological scientist on June 10, 2022.
Keyla Correia (she/her) is an ocean and environmental conservationist, activist, and co-founder of the Plastic Free Mermaids (PFM), an organization whose mission is to spread awareness about plastic pollution through education, outreaches cleanups, and political and art advocacy. With PFM, she has spoken to over 9,000 people across the U.S., hosted workshops, spoke on panels and at summits about plastic pollution, and helped have ordinances enforced and re-established in South Florida. She is a recent graduate from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology and a Bachelor of Science in Marine Science. Throughout her undergraduate career, Keyla has assisted in research projects ranging from sharks, sea turtles, bees, and microbial DNA. Keyla is passionate about making deep-rooted, positive changes in the world within the biological, oceanic, and environmental conservation realms through science communication, storytelling, legislation, education and art. She is interested in conducting research about the anthropogenic impacts and stressors on animal's metabolic processes, changes in animal behavior, alterations in the environment, toxicology, and how animals and people are being forced to adapt to the changing climate |
