Tracking the movement of PFAS within benthic environments: Investigating the burden of stingrays
This is a project working with Dr. Kady Lyons from the Georgia Aquarium and Dr. Jen Wyffels at University of Delaware. Eight different ray species were collected from California, Georgia, and North Carolina coasts of the U.S. This study addressed a critical research gap and first report by examining the presence of PFAS in plasma samples from various rays inhabiting the U.S. coastal waters. Among the PFAS analyzed in the (n = 91) ray plasma samples, our analysis revealed the presence of 11 different analytes including longer carbon-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) and perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSAs), detected in at least one of the specimens tested.
