Exploring Coastal Foam as a Novel Exploratory Matrix for per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
To date, we have over 140 sites where we have collected coastal/river/lake foam and an adjacent surface water sample. A majority of the sites are located in Florida; however, we do have a fair number of sites across the US.
This study is currently in manuscript preparation. What we found was that foam uniquely concentrates PFAS concentrations, with some cases approaching ppb levels and 30-1000x more concentrated than the adjacent surface water. We are championing foam as a new sample matrix for the detection of trace level PFAS in large bodies of water. Manuscript submission by March, will share data once it is accepted with the journal. |
Video collecting foam on the left and on the right, there are two bottles. The left bottle is the coalesced foam, while the right bottle is the adjacent surface water.
